Around 8:30 PM, a glimmering light appeared on the horizon. It was an oil rig's light, visible only when they were at the crest of a wave. It was far away, but not so far that they couldn't swim to it.^⑭

They tried to catch rainwater, but after getting hit by wave after salty wave, they put their regulators in their mouths and clung to each other.

When the storm subsided at sunrise, the light was gone. There was nothing on the horizon but waves.

Now, almost 24 hours into their ordeal^⑯, Nathan could see that Kim was badly sunburned. In the afternoon, he started vomiting uncontrollably. They were severely dehydrated^⑰.

"Let's try to rest," he said. But as soon as Kim put her face underwater, she popped back up. "Dolphins!" she yelled.

Just beneath them, about a dozen spotted dolphins circled, suddenly leaping out of the water and flipping in the air.^句8

Kim and Nathan looked at each other in amazement. Then they started laughing. The sight gave them a jolt of energy^⑱.

By 7 PM on the second day, Nathan could feel his body falling apart. At one point, he hallucinated, seeing his deceased father standing in the waves.

"Listen, I'm fighting to my last breath," Nathan told his wife. "But if I pass before you, you've got to cut that tether and just let me go."^句9

Kim didn't want to hear it. She had already decided: if Nathan died, she would sink to the bottom with him.

Just before midnight, a Coast Guard plane that had been searching for 36 hours finally spotted their flashlight signals. Ten minutes later, they heard the roar of a rescue boat.

"They were literally the best-looking people I've seen in my life," Nathan says of the Coast Guard officers who pulled them from the water.^句10

For the next five minutes, they just lay on the deck—exhausted, injured, but together and very much alive.
